Biomechanical Golf Screening

At Active Physiotherapy, we specialise in the assessment of golfers of all ages, in order to identify and treat common postural problems and muscle imbalances, that can lead to more serious injury and compromise a player's performance.

During the screening, posture, joint ranges and muscle flexibility are assessed, in order to identify any problems or potential problems, leading to injury.

Golf-specific screenings are now frequently used by many golf organisations, such as the English Golf Union, and regarded as an important part of the game at elite, professional and amateur levels. Additionally, tour players such as Tiger Woods, regularly see physiotherapists to maintain optimum performance and prevent injury at top level.

However, it is just as important for handicap golfers to be aware of their own posture, strength and flexibility, as golf can place a huge strain on the lower back and other joints over time, leading to injury.

Biomechanical screening is the first step a golfer should take to determine any physical and postural limitations which may directly impact on their swing, game, and overall physical health and fitness. From this, a personal exercise and conditioning program, tailored to the individual golfer will be given.

Most importantly, any muscle imbalances are identified, and specific stretching, postural and core stability exercises are given in order to rectify these, and in particular, strengthen and stabilize the muscles around the lower back, protecting this from injury.

Many golfers struggle with technical faults, which may actually be the result of a physical imbalance in the upper or lower body. As golf is an asymmetrical sport, for example, a right handed golfer always moves from left to right during their backswing, and requires a player to lean over the ball, you find common imbalances between muscles at the front of the body (which are often tight and shortened), and the back (which are often weaker).

At Active Physiotherapy, we tailor your golf exercise and conditioning programme to any technical faults you may have in your swing, and can work together with your PGA golf professional to rectify these. At present, Katie works with PGA professionals Steve Harrison and Stuart Rafferty, at Eden Golf Course, Crosby-on-Eden, in order to provide effective treatment and exercises for individual golfers.
